First started by Lydia Tzigane of Dubai in May 2007, it is dedicated to the second Sunday of May each year. The focus is to promote the art of Middle Eastern dance with performances or educational events to celebrate the day and an opportunity to raise money for a charity.
Based in Canada and operated by Sabeya,
this organization began in 2011. It encourages cities to register as a bellydance flash mob to support World Bellydance Day. The keynote feature of this project is that it supplies registered teams with the choreography to be performed globally on World Bellydance Day as well as the opportunity for teams to raise funds for their local domestic crisis charities.
